Most Christian people unschooled in Mormon doctrinal history, who are currently being taught LDS doctrine by the full-time Mormon missionaries (those 58,000 some-odd young men and women who wear suits and ties and modest dresses, with badges identifying them as elders and sisters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and by the millions of older part-time men and women called ward missionaries, don’t realize what went on in the Salt Lake Utah Valley from 1851 to around 1900; that is, the religious culture of the Mormon people, the god that they worshiped, and the detailed theology surrounding that worship. To be perfectly honest, some of those full-time and ward missionaries ignorantly don’t have any idea about correct Mormon history. The changing doctrines established by the first founding prophet of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith, from 1830 to 1844, were declared by Smith to be continuing revelations from his god, and thus were rendered by him as cannon scripture (the mind, will, and voice of the Mormon lord). You see, after Joseph Smith was lynched and killed by his detractors in Carthage, Illinois in 1844, Brigham Young, the second prophet, seer, and revelator of the Mormon Church, led the primary component of the multi-splintered LDS Church from Nauvoo, Illinois west to the Salt Lake Valley in order to practice, in virtual isolation, the religion given to them by Joseph Smith. Yet, Young took with him, from Nauvoo, thousands of former Christians who had come from all over the world to follow what they thought were the commandments of Jesus Christ.

This essay is concerned with, and focused on, the primary theological doctrine practiced by the rank-and-file Mormon people, which, in its original form, was concocted, and verbally rendered, by Joseph Smith before his death; and which was expanded by Brigham Young into a formal written cannon doctrine that was placed, in 1877, as a liturgy into the Mormon temple rite in the St. George Mormon Temple. The problem that arose at the advent of the 20th Century, some 23 years after the death of Brigham Young, was that this precious Mormon doctrine was totally unchristian in theology and, thus, a detriment to the false pretensions of the Mormon Church before the American Christian world that Mormonism was a Christian religion. This was during the time that Utah was being considered for annexation as a U.S. state. You see, all of the 20th Century Mormon prophets, seers, and revelators, who have comprised the First Presidency (the presiding Mormon prophet and his two apostle counselors) and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the second ruling body of Mormon General Authorities), have denied, and currently deny, that Brigham Young, as a presiding prophet of the Mormon Church for nearly 32 years, proclaimed, as the Adam-God Doctrine, that Adam, of the Garden of Eden, and Eve, his wife, were the heavenly father-god and the mother-goddess that procreated the spirits of all the men and women who were born, are being born, and will be born into mortality. Moreover, one of the 20th Century’s presiding prophets, and presidents of the LDS Church, Spencer W. Kimball, called the person who concocted the Adam-God Doctrine a heretic and, more or less, damned him (Brigham Young) to perdition in one of his LDS General Conference addresses in 1984. Nonetheless, since the year 1995 the Internet has opened-up a virtual library of 19th Century Mormon doctrinal history to the world, which was deliberately hidden by the Mormon Church from the eyes of the Christian world for the greater part of the 20th Century.

Most non-fiction books written by authors are intended to, either, extol, define, or denigrate certain ideas and cultures, and the people who advocated or opposed them. Biographies are written to explain the facts surrounding peoples’ lives, and books of history are written to explore the facts surrounding events that have shaped particular societies. Most biographies are written after the people, about whom they concern, are dead. Take, for instance, the original biography of George Washington, by the author Weems. This historical collection of facts about George Washington has always, since its publication, been regarded as essentially correct; though certain details about Washington’s youth have been debated as to their complete correctness. Essentially all books that have been written about particular 17th, 18th, and 19th Century cultures, extolling them during the time that they existed, have been regarded by most historians as factually correct, especially if the presiding figures of those cultures put their seals of approval on the books. As such, the most revealing written work describing the theological doctrines of the Mormon Church, as the Mormon people practiced their religion in the theocratic Utah Valley under the thumb of the presiding Mormon Prophet, Brigham Young, from 1851 until around 1877, was a book written in 1877, by Edward W. Tullidge, which was reviewed and blessed by Brigham Young before its publication, and dedicated to the second General President of the LDS Relief Society, Eliza R. Snow. Its title is “The Women of Mormondom.” Approximately five hundred copies of the book were printed between 1877 and 1900, but very few of them remain in existence today because, in 1907, the presiding Mormon prophet, Joseph F. Smith, ordered that all copies of the book, in the possession of faithful Mormons in Utah and Idaho, be burned in order to destroy the existing written evidence of the Mormon culture surrounding the Adam-God Doctrine. Most of the faithful true-blue Mormons complied with Smith’s order, which left only a scant few copies of the book remaining; those possessed by libraries and collectors around the world. Fortunately, the book can still be requested and obtained via inter-library loan by those individuals desiring to read it.

As I write this essay, I have, on my desk, a second, 1965, reprinted copy of “The Women of Mormondom,” (obtained from the Lovejoy library of Southern Illinois University) to which I am referring. Of all the people who eventually read this essay, I sincerely hope that it reaches the eyes of Marcus B. Nash, a member of the Mormon First Quorum of the Seventy, the body of Mormon General Authorities who are not prophets, seers, and revelators; but full-time men who do the official bidding of the presiding Mormon prophet and his twelve apostles. I knew Nash pretty well when he was a Mormon stake president in the Lynnwood, Washington Stake for a number of years, before he was made a Mormon general authority. On numerous occasions, I talked with him about Mormon doctrine. You see, it was during the year 1999 that the Lord Jesus made very clear to me the heinous heresies of Mormon theology and the doctrine arising from it; and it was in early 2000 that I made this officially known to Stake President Marcus Nash in a conference that I had alone with him, and only him.

I am sure that Nash distinctly recalls the occasion at the Mountlake Terrace, Washington Chapel, when I showed him detailed evidence, from a meticulously compiled book of Mormon doctrinal history written by Mormon historian Fred Collier, that Brigham Young, as a presiding prophet of the LDS Church, placed the Adam-God doctrine, in a written liturgy, into the Mormon temple rite as cannon scripture in the St. George Temple in 1877, just before his death. Nash, then an attorney (a graduate of the Brigham Young University Law School), just looked at me, like he already knew that what I was saying was fact, and said in a monotone, “You can’t be sure that’s the truth.” I remember responding, “It’s as much historical fact as the fact that Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States.” Nash, for whom I had recently served as a ward mission leader of the Mountlake Terrace Ward, got up without saying anything else and walked toward the door of the small room in which we were sitting; but before he left he turned around and said, “You know, spouting stuff like that can cause you to lose your membership in the Church. I’d advise you to remain quiet about what you believe is fact.” About a week later, I was curtly, and unexpectedly summoned into the office of the Mountlake Terrace Ward Bishop, Kim Juritch, and bluntly told not to talk to any of the ward members about the Adam-God Doctrine, which I had mentioned to Marcus Nash. Juretich said, at that time, that my membership in the Church was on the line.

Tullidge’s book, “The Woman of Mormondom,” has a very ornate black and white picture of Eliza R. Snow on its second page. Snow was the second General President of the Mormon Relief Society, the official church auxiliary to which all faithful Mormon women belonged, and still belong, and was made the celestial (heavenly) polygamous wife of Joseph Smith (by proxy in the Mormon temple) before her death. Tullidge wrote his book dedicated to the task of revealing how the Mormon women of the Salt Lake, Utah Valley, both wives and unmarried spinsters (like Eliza R. Snow), were dedicated to the theological doctrines pronounced as cannon scripture, and the will, mind, and voice of the Mormon god, by Mormon Prophet Brigham Young. Further, yet, is the preeminent realization that the basic theology of the Adam-God Doctrine came not from Brigham Young, but from his mentor and teacher, Joseph Smith. On pages 13-14 of his book, Tullidge wrote:

“The oracle of this last grand truth of woman’s divinity and of her eternal Mother (Eve) as the partner with the Father (Adam) in the creation of the worlds, is none other than the Mormon Church. It was revealed in the glorious theology of Joseph (Smith), and established by Brigham (Young) in the vast patriarchal system which he has made firm as the foundations of the earth, by proclaiming Adam as our Father and God. The Father is first in name and order, but the Mother is with him, these twain, one from the beginning.”

The fact that Eliza R. Snow and Brigham Young, both, blessed his book and its contents before it was published indicate that they fully endorsed what Tullidge published as theological fact about the Adam-God Doctrine, and the other history, doctrine, and cultural practices of the 19th Century Mormon Church mentioned in the book. Tullidge’s book reveals the facts about the 49 year practice of the Adam-God Doctrine by the rank-and-file Mormon Church before and after the death of Brigham Young, with the same unadulterated veracity that Parson Weems wrote, in 1800, the biographical “The life of Washington.” This book is a complete vindication for the Mormon scholars and historians who were accused of blasphemy, and of teaching false doctrine, by the Mormon Church hierarchy. The Salt Lake Mormon leaders vilified and excommunicated any Mormon historian who publicly, and correctly, stated the doctrinal history of the Mormon Church and its intricate practice of the Adam-God Doctrine in its temple rite until around 1907. Yet, the attempts by the Mormon Church authoritarians to eviscerate, and rewrite, the cult’s own 19th Century history has, since 1990, backfired, and has clearly shown the world, especially since the advent of the Internet, that Mormon doctrine has, since 1830, been only a convolution of changeable uninspired man-made ordinances and rules, and not the word of an almighty, omnipotent, omniscient, and changeless God, everlasting to everlasting.

In “The Women of Mormondom,” on page 180, Tullidge writes, “Adam is our Father and our God. He is the God of the earth.” So says Brigham Young. Adam is the great archangel of this creation. He is Michael. He is the Ancient of Days. He is the father of our elder brother, Jesus Christ-the father of him who shall come as Messiah to reign. He is the father of the spirits as well as the tabernacles of the sons and daughters of man, Adam!”

You see, Mormons believed, and many still believe, that Adam was resurrected prior to Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Further, on page 179, Tullidge continues. “Michael (another name for Adam) was a celestial, resurrected being, of another world.” You see, Joseph Smith taught, and Brigham Young expanded, the Mormon doctrine that ordinary mortal men can become gods, with a capital G, after they are resurrected, and that Adam was an ordinary mortal man who lived on in another previous world, on an earth somewhere in the cosmos, who was resurrected and made into a god, with a capital G. Brigham Young taught that Adam was not created, but came about biologically by being born in ordinary mortal fashion. On page 180, Tullidge continues. “Adam was not made out of a lump of clay, as we make a brick, nor was Eve taken as a rib -a bone– from his side. They came by generation (biological reproduction)… ” Through the time that Brigham Young advanced the Adam-God Doctrine, he preached the principles of the Doctrine in discourses pronounced during LDS General Conference. When the context of Tullidge’s words are examined and studied in “The Women of Mormondom,” the context of what Brigham Young said in the following segment of an April 9, 1852 General Conference address is totally understandable:

“When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Spirit. And who is the Father? He is the first of the human family… However, I have told you the truth as far as I have gone… Jesus our elder brother was begotten in the flesh by the same character who was in the garden of Eden and who is our Father in heaven. Now, let all who hear these doctrines pause before they make light of them, or treat them with indifference, for they will prove their salvation or damnation.”

To understand that Edward Tullidge also, himself, fully believed the Adam-God Doctrine will assist the reader in realizing that he was writing what was the predominant theological belief among the Mormons (Latter-day Saints) in the Salt Lake Valley and among the British Mormons in 1877. On page 196, Tullidge wrote:

“When Brigham Young proclaimed to the nations that Adam was out Father and God, and Eve, his partner, the Mother of a world-both in a mortal and celestial sense-he made the most important revelation ever oracled to the race since the days of Adam himself.”

Tullidge makes plain the Mormon doctrine of the heavenly mother-goddess, who Eliza R. Snow immortalized in her song-poem, “O My Father.” As Brigham Young declared, “A race cannot be spiritually procreated without both a Father-god and a Mother-goddess. On page 197, in his book, Tullidge exclaims, “Thus opened creation, and the womb of everlasting motherhood throbbed with divine ecstasy. We shall prefer Brigham’s expounding of the dark passages of Genesis. Our first parents were not made up like mortal bricks. They came to be the Mother and Father of a new creation of souls.”

The worshiping of a Mother-goddess in heaven is an implicit part of Mormon theological doctrine that underscores the basic eternal rule that a Mormon man cannot become a god, with a capital G, but by adhering to, and obeying, all of the commandments of Mormonism, and that the celestial sexual relationship between a Mormon exalted-man god, with a capital G, and his wife, or wives, to whom he is sealed by power of the Mormon priesthood, and with whom he shares the priesthood power, is the only way procreation of spirit children, and the shaping of worlds through preexisting matter, can be accomplished. You see, a Mormon god, with a capital G, has no power to create, but only transform something preexisting through a partnership with his goddess-wife. Tullidge, on page 195, calls the doctrine of goddess-motherhood the “Trinity of Motherhood, or the celestial Masonry of Womanhood, and states that, “The book of patriarchal theology is full of conceptions. Like the star-bespangled heavens-like the eternities which it mantles-is that wonderful theology.” Regarding Eliza R. Snow’s own proclamation of the doctrine of the worship and veneration of the goddess-mother of this world, Eve, Tullidge, on page 190, writes, “It was of such a theme that “Sister Eliza” sang; and with such a theme her hymn of invocation to our Father and Mother in heaven soon made the saints familiar in every land. Let us somewhat further expound the theme of this hymn, which our poetess (Eliza) could not fully embody in the simple form of verse. God the Father, and God the Mother stand, in the grand preexisting view as the origin and center of the spirits of all the generations of mortals who had been entabernacled on this earth.”

The relegation of Jesus to Adam and Eve, the Father and Mother in heaven is clearly understood in Tullidge’s explication of basic Mormon theology spawned by Joseph Smith, expanded and clarified by Brigham Young, and worshiped and venerated by all of the Mormons who accepted the temple doctrines expressed by liturgy, during and after 1877, in what Brigham Young entitled the “Lecture before the Veil.” This was basic Mormon theological doctrine that all Mormon men and women, who aspired to be gods and goddesses, had to accept by swearing fidelity and allegiance to the secrets of the Mormon temple. As a further evidence of the truthful and factual writing of Edward W. Tullidge, in his book, “The Women of Mormondom,” the complete explication of the “Lecture at the Veil,” the composite Adam-God Doctrine, which was placed into the Mormon temple rite by Brigham Young in 1877, may be found in its entirety in the 1979 book compiled by Fred C. Collier, “Unpublished Revelations of the Prophets and Presidents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Volume 1, Part 75.” The original document, handwritten by N. John Nuttal, Brigham Young’s private secretary, in February 1877, from the spoken words of Brigham Young, was placed in the vault, or safe, of the St. George LDS Temple in 1877, and it has remained there unto the present day; unless it has been destroyed by order of a presiding Mormon prophet, since 1877, to eviscerate evidence that might be subpoenaed by a court of law to prove that the Adam-God Doctrine was, indeed, regarded as holy Mormon doctrine and scripture in the Mormon temple.

Therefore, there is no doubt that the book, “The Women of Mormondom” was intended by Edward Tullidge to encapsulate, and to expound, the polytheistic patriarchal theology of Mormonism and to extol what Brigham Young had revealed as the mind, the word, and the voice of the Mormon lord, and the power of the Mormon god unto salvation, according to the cannon scripture found in the book of LDS scripture known as the Doctrine and Covenants, Section 68, verse 4. The book was also to extol Eliza R. Snow and her dedication to the Adam-God Doctrine through her poetry, songs, and other good works. The ever-changing face of Mormonism, therefore, cogently illustrates that what was once, in the 19th Century, sacred LDS doctrine, was pragmatically changed by the Mormon hierarchy to be regarded as heresy in the 20th Century and to be, on the surface, denied as fundamental Mormon theology. This pragmatic change was, however, intended not as an evisceration of the doctrines of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, but only as a deceptive smoke-screen to manipulate Christians into believing that Mormons worship the Jesus Christ of the Holy Bible, which they don’t. The Mormons wanted, in a manner of speaking, to have their cake and eat it, too; but historical facts and the essence of truth cannot be hidden very long without the pretenders being detected. Those converts to Mormonism will eventually discover through their own research efforts, or being informed by an essay such as this, what the Mormons believed as theological doctrine during the 19th Century, and what they did to hide it from mainstream Christianity during the 20th Century. Thereafter, they will have to decide whether they will continue to serve the false gods of Mormonism or turn away from them and serve the Lord Jesus Christ, the one and only Savior of the world, the one God and master of the universe. I hope that Mormon Marcus Nash will eventually be one of these people.

Go to your local store and buy several items of the same product – say a package of three golf balls. Though the golf balls appear identical, closer examination will reveal ever so slight differences. One ball maybe fractionally larger; another ever so slightly less spherical; perhaps the third is ever so slightly lighter. The generality that extends from this is that any two seemingly identical products will have nevertheless slight variations in their properties.

Now buy a packet of three electrons (or their antimatter equivalent, the positron). Each electron, or positron, will be identical in size, mass and electric charge to as many decimal places as you care to measure. All electrons (and positrons) are 100% absolutely identical clones.

Take one electron and one positron and bring them together. They annihilate releasing a fixed amount of energy. Take another electron and another positron and repeat the scenario. The pair will annihilate releasing an identical amount of energy in the process. The amount of energy released in each electron-positron annihilation case is the same, to as many decimal places as you can measure. That’s quite unlike taking a match from a box of matches, striking same and releasing its stored chemical energy as heat energy. Another match from the same box wouldn’t release, to as many decimal places as you care to measure, the absolutely identical amount of heat energy.

How come identical golf balls aren’t but identical electrons (or positrons) are?

Electrons (or positrons), having mass, can be created from energy (just like mass can be converted to energy as in the case of the electron-positron annihilation process). You (human intelligence) can’t create identical golf balls, but a seemingly non-intelligent natural process (Mother Nature by any other name) can create or produce copies of a fundamental particle, like an electron (or positron), that are clones of one another down to the nittiest-grittiest detail.

Even with quantum mechanics in force, you’d think energy could create or be converted into an electron with twice the standard electron mass or twice the electric charge, or thrice even. But no. You see one electron you’ve seen them all – every electron that is, was or will be, anywhere, everywhere, anytime, every time in our Universe. Electrons, like Black Holes, have no hair. That means they have no individual personality. In fact Black Holes can be said to have some fuzz because they can and do differ in terms of size, mass and electric charge. Electrons have the exact same size, mass and electric charge, so absolutely no hair! Relative to Black Holes, electrons (and positrons) are absolutely bald!

Invoking all things quantum is still a bit of a cop-out in that while quantum means things are this or that, one unit or two, one energy level or two energy levels, there’s no explanation as to why it’s only one or two, not one & a half. It just is, but why remains a mystery.

Why are all electrons (and positrons) identical?

1) Of course THE cop-out answer is that that’s just the way God wanted it and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the matter.

Unfortunately, there is no real evidence for the existence of any deity past and/or present that stands up to any detailed scrutiny.

2) One could resort to an explanation via string theory merged with quantum physics. String theory just replaces elementary particles as little billiard balls for elementary little bits of string (albeit not string as we know it). Now maybe, as in all things quantum, these strings can be one unit in length, or two units, or three units, or four units, etc. Any positive whole number multiple of one string length is okay. Now say that a two length unit of string is an electron. A two unit length of anti-string is therefore a positron.

Or, one can suggest that strings vibrate and can only vibrate at specific frequencies as any musician playing a stringed instrument knows. So, a string vibrating at one allowed frequency is an electron; if it vibrates at another allowable frequency maybe that’s a proton or a neutron. Again, a vibrating anti-matter string would produce manifestations of the antimatter particles, a positron being dependent upon one of the allowable vibrating frequencies.

Of the two possibilities, it’s the vibration rate theory that’s preferred. All strings are of the same fundamental length – their rate of vibration can differ, but at precise intervals. What causes strings to vibrate at the rate they do, and how they can change rates of vibration (morph from one kind of particle into others) are questions better left for another time.

Unfortunately, string theory has no credibility in terms of any actual experimental evidence, and, to add insult to injury, it requires the postulation of ten to eleven dimensions in order to fit the pieces together. If string theory gets some experimental runs on the board then, and only then, will it be time to take strings seriously.

3) Well, one other possible explanation is that all electrons are absolutely identical because there is only one electron in actual existence. If you see the same object twice, thrice of a zillion times over, then it’s the same object and the fact that it is consistently identical is not a great mystery. But how can the Universe contain only one electron? That seems to be the least obvious statement anyone could ever make – the statement of a total wacko.

Well, one explanation goes something like this. Our one electron has zipped back and forth between the Alpha and Omega points again, and again, and again. Now multiply ‘again’ by zillions upon zillions upon zillions of times. When you take a cross section at any ‘now’ point in time between the Alpha and the Omega, there will be zillions upon zillions upon zillions of electrons visible ‘now’. Simple, isn’t it?

Unfortunately, while there is no violation of physical laws at the micro level in travelling through time (apart from going forward at a rate of one second per second which we do whether we like it or not), no exact causality mechanism has been proposed to explain how and why an elementary particle shifts gear into time reverse (or forward again).

Back to the original question, why are all electrons identical? Or not, as the case may be.

4) Perhaps in other parallel universes, ones that have different physics, all electrons (if they have electrons at all) might not be identical. That possibility is akin to asking about numbers of angels dancing on pinheads. There’s just no way of ever knowing since parallel universes are beyond the reach of science as we know it.

But say each member of the particle zoo weren’t identical to every other member in kind. Say electrons came in a thousand variations of mass and electric charge; ditto the other elementary particles. You’d have a particle jungle. If that were the case, presumably it would prove to be very difficult to create identical atoms of the elements and identical molecular compounds and ultimately it would prove difficult to build up the structure of our Universe as we know it, including us. An analogy might be that it’s far easier to assemble a ten piece jigsaw puzzle and one with a billion pieces. Our particle zoo seems to be a Goldilocks zoo – not too many particles and variations thereof; not to few either (I mean a universe composed of just identical electrons is equally as bad for life as we know it). Of course if that – the Goldilocks particle zoo – weren’t so, we wouldn’t be here to ponder the issue.

Moving on up the chain, assuming all members of the particle zoo are identical then atoms of any particular element must be identical – if you’ve seen one gold atom, you’ve seen them all (though owning them all is quite a different matter). If elements come in different isotopes, then all the specific isotope atoms of that element are identical.

Further moving on up the chain, if identical atoms combine with other different identical atoms, then presumably the resulting molecules will be identical. While that’s true, it’s only true up to a point, because eventually you can get molecules that while seemingly identical, have handedness. That is, your hands, while identical, aren’t identical because one has a left-handed orientation; the other has a right-handed orientation. That’s the point things start to fall apart or break down.

That apart, macro objects, like golf balls, are composed of millions of atoms and/or molecules. If a golf ball has one more, or one less molecule than another, well the two aren’t identical.

5) Introducing the maths connection: Here, there and everywhere, on a flat surface, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line; triangles have a sum total 180 degrees; 2 + 2 = 4. In each case, it is so to as many decimal places as you care to calculate. Every 7 is identical to every other 7 – no more and no less. That’s true whether or not one is dealing with base ten, or in binary (base two).

So what’s the connection? All computer generated simulations, in whatever context, for whatever purpose, are ultimately software programs, which in turn are just mathematical constructions. All you see are ultimately expressions of maths, of binary bits, of 0’s and 1’s, something on or off. So if you simulate some object using binary software programming, and you create another object using the exact same binary software coding, then those two virtual objects are identical. Now, call what you have simulated, ‘electrons’. So if all electrons are identical, maybe it’s because they are mathematical constructions – the end products of computer software/programming.

In simulations, virtual objects can interact with other virtual objects (more mathematical wizardry). Change happens. Well, that’s what we observe in our reality too. The question is, is our reality really real reality, or simulated reality? Are our electrons identical because each is the product of an identical piece of binary software programming? That may not ultimately be the answer, but it’s an answer. Electrons are the same since they are all constructed from the same mathematical whole cloth of binary bits – of 0’s and 1’s.

Discussion: One may argue that there are indeed differences between electrons (and positrons), we just haven’t measured to enough decimal places yet. While that might be true, I personally wouldn’t want to bet on it.

Conclusion: I started out with the question of why all electrons are identical. The answer is, I don’t know and neither, I suspect does anyone else. However, the foundation of physics (itself the foundation for the other sciences) is grounded in maths, and maths, as noted above, has no problem with the concept. All identical equations yield identical results; the ‘equals’ sign itself demands identicalness. Perhaps maths has more fundamental ‘reality’ than anyone has given it credit for. That’s certainly the case if we should happen to be inhabiting a software generated, simulated Universe

Postscript: The concept of identicalness can bring us into some weird scientific and philosophical territory. Two people examining the same object will not agree to the Nth degree that the object under consideration is the exact same object, an identical object, when compared from each person’s perspective. Perception is ultimately a function of brain chemistry and no two people have the exact same brain chemistry due to various factors like genetics, age, physiology, disease, fatigue, and/or intakes of various solid, liquid and gaseous elements and compounds that directly affect brain chemistry. The differences may be really tiny and nitpicky but nevertheless present. To take another case, if three court stenographers all record and transcribe a days worth of testimony, no doubt there will be (ever so) slight differences in the final three versions.

Even the same person experiencing the same object or event a second, third, etc. time – say watching a film again or listening to a CD track again, won’t have identical experiences, again due to the internal brain chemistry being slightly different on each occasion. That’s apart from the fact that external influences like temperature, humidity, pressure, and general wear and tear (entropy) all affect that object or event and the environment between that object/event and the person experiencing the object/event. Those external factors also change from moment to moment.

People though tend to agree (brain chemistry not withstanding) on what an independent umpire says about an object or event – the independent umpire being an instrument or measuring device. Instruments are of course also subject to external influences, but aren’t affected by brain chemistry – they have no brains!

Measurements tend to be numerical, and numbers are pretty straight forward. However, all measurements are subject to some uncertainty or error margins, especially analogue devices like a ruler – is it 1.510 cm or 1.511 cm or 1.509 cm? Or a thermometer – is it reading 31.37 degrees or 31.38 degrees or 31.36 degrees? Or take a standard watch or clock – is it 12:00:00 or 12:00:01 or 11:59:59?

Digital instruments however have readouts that have a finite number of places in which to display the result, so they don’t tend to give you a plus or minus uncertainty error bar. A digital instrument will readout that the length IS 1.510 cm; the temperature IS 31.37 degrees; the time IS 12:00:00, and everyone looking at the readout will agree.

In the case of an electron, the independent umpire gives the same numerical results for each electron it measures. Of course there are still error bars, but with each further decimal place reached, identicalness holds and the error bars get less and less.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR MIND

If there’s anything that should be 100% comprehensible to you in exquisite detail it’s the workings of your mind. I mean you and only you inhabit it 24/7/52. It’s a lifelong relationship, one-on-one; at the very least till death us do part. But if you understand even the workings of just your own mind, put yourself down for a Nobel Prize, you’ve earned it.

While different people have slightly different brain chemistries and neural network connections thus explaining different personalities, interests, worldviews and abilities, etc. you have just one normal brain chemistry (unless you deliberately alter it) and one neural network connection to come to terms with. So, we’ll (actually will have to) concentrate on the one, since you’re a typical representation of the generic whole.

You do a lot of mental stuff each day. From the moment you wake up your conscious mind goes into hyper-drive (your subconscious was still churning away while you were sleeping). Those daily mental gyrations tend to be interrelated but involve things like decisions and planning, from the chessboard to the dinner table; memory and recall; sensory processing (taste, smell, sight, sound, touch); and learning, even if it’s the evening news, the local gossip across the fence, or what’s on sale this week at the supermarket.

I need to state from the outset that the mind does have a very limited ability to deal with more than just a couple of things at one time. In fact it’s best to deal with issues arising in a linear fashion. You cannot concentrate on driving while at the same time concentrating on a cell-phone conversation as aptly demonstrated on the “MythBusters” TV show. I’m sure you can identify with trying to juggle three, four, five or more things at once, all demanding your full attention with things just sort of going to hell in a hand-basket, sometimes with serious or potentially serious consequences.

YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

Have you ever had a complex thought leap suddenly, almost or even unbidden, into your conscious (the self-aware or self-conscious) mind? Why? Was it your conscious mind that brought it to the fore, or your subconscious (otherwise more technically known as the unconscious) mind? Chances are, it was your subconscious (unconscious) mind. It’s been shown that your subconscious mind makes up your mind for you split seconds before you’re consciously aware of it. It’s almost as if it was predetermined.

Your subconscious mind bubbles along under the radar without an actual conscious input from your self-aware you, processing, ever processing. What should be random bubbling like boiling water should therefore result in a mess – a hodgepodge. Instead, you seem to get a purposefully and linearly directed nebulous something which at the least expected time pops through your grey matter’s ‘wormhole’ that links your subconscious mind with your conscious mind. Your conscious mind cannot seemingly draw out of your subconscious mind the nebulous something you need when you need it.

So how does your subconscious stay on the straight and narrow without your conscious input? I have no idea, but it apparently does. When your conscious thoughts go off the rails, say you’re distracted by something not relevant to the task at hand; well you can quickly force your conscious mind back on track to the task at hand. You don’t have to do that with your subconscious since the subconscious apparently can’t be distracted.

So I wonder whether the world’s greatest thinkers – scientists, philosophers, inventors, writers, etc. weren’t really conscious thinkers at all but derived much of their inspiration from their subconscious.

It’s not your conscious mind that connects the dots, it’s the subconscious. How often do you hear, or even tell yourself, “I’ll sleep on it” (which is why it is probably a good idea to always have pen and paper or a Dictaphone next to the bed)? How many people can relate to solving an out of the ordinary mental puzzle in their dreams, or the solution comes to them ‘out of the blue’ while preoccupied with something related. There are no tools, only the resources in your own mind. In fact if you consciously try to come up with an original creative idea, you’ll probably fail, but when you’re in mental neutral gear – eureka.

Ever immediately forget something you thought of just minutes before and cannot now for the life of you consciously recall? Throw your mind into neutral and when you least expect it, there it is back to the fore again. Now quickly, write it down!

Here are a few other examples where the subconscious rules your roost.

We’re all aware of hypnosis drawing out memories locked away, in the subconscious of course. You have no control in your conscious ability to recall. It takes a more extreme form of that “gotta put my mind in neutral”, the hypnotic state, to bring the data to the fore. Of course unethical or badly trained or amateur hypnotists can implant false memories or manipulate those already there thus producing unreliable results.

It’s not at all extraordinary for a minority (10 – 25%) of absolutely normal adult humans to have at least one vivid hallucination during their lifetime – a product of their subconscious that’s probably much more common in children’s ‘make-believe’ like there’s a monster in the closet or their inevitable invisible playmates. As our minds grow older and mature, we become less likely to have subconscious hallucinations, but they can still happen.

Perhaps connected, we’ve nearly all experienced involuntary (as to subject) daydreams, which, like sleeping dreams, is a product of the subconscious.

Speaking of sleep, when you go to sleep you go into lockdown mode courtesy of the subconscious so you don’t physically act out the actions you dream about. That makes sense otherwise you could do yourself and others in your immediate vicinity a serious mischief, but you have no control over that lockdown process.

An ordinary conscious level mental puzzle might be how to get from A to B on the bus when your car is in the repair shop. These are the sorts of ordinary every day mental gymnastics that usually require tools – hammer and nails; a cookbook; a train timetable; a table of trigonometry functions; and memory. However, in order to utilize them, you have got to have concepts of them filed away in your subconscious cubby-holes, so everyday mental, and apparently conscious activity have mandatory roots in the subconscious, otherwise, no go.

Just as an aside, there’s another version of subconscious activity that usually deals with body language. How often do you see someone talking on the phone to someone else, neither party can see the other, yet probably both parties are making all sorts of hand gestures and using other kinds of body language as if they were talking face-to-face? Probably quite frequently – it’s the norm. Or you see a woman sitting on a bus or in a café or some such, and she’s preening her hair, running her fingers through it but not even aware she’s doing it.

When you only have microseconds to act, say when you’re standing in the batters box 60 feet, 6 inches away from the pitchers mound and a rapidly rotating baseball is heading towards you at 95 mph, do you stand there and consciously crunch the numbers before your go/no-go swing, or just turn the issue over to your subconscious to go for it, or let the ball pass you by. Ditto that for an outfielder chasing down a fly ball. In such situations your conscious mind is worthless baggage. Instinct, training, practice and all those other facets embedded in your subconscious required come to the fore and takeover. You can do the physics calculations at your leisure after the game.

CREATIVITY (The ‘What If’)

Is creativity pre-programmed or an act of free will? How many things do you do during the course of your day that you did not consciously plan to do, yet could have so planned in theory? Those spur of the moment things, even little things, you didn’t walk up having them on your agenda, must have originated from your subconscious. You really, apparently, didn’t have any free will over doing those agenda items – that is doing them consciously with a before-the-fact intent.

I call creativity the mental “what if” exercise. You take this bit from this cubby-hole and that bit from that cubby-hole and a third bit and fourth and fifth bit from other cubby-hols and combine them in a unique, theoretical, creative, what if, ways. It’s been said that from the reality of one drop of water you should be able to come up with, or envision, the idea of a waterfall or an ocean, even if you’ve never seen or heard about either and therefore don’t have a waterfall or ocean cubby-hole. So you reach into your cubby-hole for the concept of many, numerous, billions and billions; your cubby-hole for cliff; your cubby-hole for bowl or depression; your cubby-hole for gravity, and several more besides. And so you come up with new cubby-holes for theoretical waterfall (but probably lacking the thunderous sounds, spray and foam), and theoretical ocean (but probably without salt, marine life, the tides and waves), not actual parts of your reality, only your ‘what if’ reality, and to be honest, a lot of our cubby-holes are of that nature.

Let’s take a simple everyday scenario. I think I’ll cook up a pizza for dinner tonight. It’s a spur of the moment eureka moment that wasn’t present when you woke up this morning. So where did that pizza for dinner thought come from? It probably came as a bolt out of the blue at lightning speed; it leapt into your conscious mind, but it was constructed from the various bits and pieces that resides elsewhere in your mind – in your subconscious mind.

Inside your mind you store a whole dictionary full of concepts, each in its own little cubby-hole, which you probably keep adding to all the time. The dictionary of a fifty-year-old is much bigger than that of a five-year old. Imagination or creativity is that which picks and chooses relevant concepts from those various cubby-holes and strings the chosen bits, at seemingly light speed, into a logical linear conglomerate. Sometimes the bits and pieces are strung together to form an original bit of creativity or of the imagination, though that may not be original or creative to someone else, but it is to you, and that’s what counts. I mean I / cook / small / mushroom / thin base / pizza / dinner might not be all that much a stretch of your imagination or overly creative, but I / cook / small / thin base / magic mushroom / pizza / dinner might be.

But let’s back up a second to that storehouse of cubby-hole concepts. That I / cook / small / mushroom / thin base / pizza / dinner is a very specific outcome. You have cubby-holes for cook from scratch vs. ready made frozen vs. dial-a-home-delivery vs. dine out. You have cubby-holes for toppings like mushroom vs. pineapple vs. pepperoni vs. beef vs. ham vs. olives vs. onions vs. capsicum or some combination of those, and a lot more besides. You have cubby-hole concepts for breakfast vs. lunch vs. TV snack-time vs. dinner. Then there’s small individual size vs. large size vs. family size where everybody gets the same deal. And thin base vs. medium base vs. thick base pizzas. Lastly, there’s the choice of pizza in the first place. Your cubby-holes contain concepts of alternative dinners like steak vs. lamb vs. seafood vs. spaghetti vs. chicken vs. turkey vs. ham vs. any of dozens of other possibilities. From the hundreds upon hundreds of choices / options / permutations drawn from those concepts stored in the cubby-holes of you mind, you make one subconscious decision. It could be even a slightly irrational decision – maybe you don’t have any pizza-related ingredients in stock; it’s nasty weather and you’ll need to go to the supermarket!

I’d suggest that with so many hundreds of options (and this is just one tiny facet of your daily coming to terms with your day), how can you make a final conscious decision using only your conscious mind? You’d be stymied. You’d be indecisive faced with that multitude of conscious options. It seems as if your subconscious crunches the numbers; your consciousness acts on the answer. Your subconscious says I / cook / small / mushroom / thin base / pizza / dinner and then your conscious mind puts that answer into an action mode and makes it so.

Of course not all creative activity is subconscious in origin – or so you think. You compose a letter off the top of your head; ditto holding a real time conversation.

DECISIONS

Do you take a right turn or a left turn at Oak Street? That was the issue at hand for a popular song, and surely the resolution of the issue is a conscious decision and subject to free will. Your subconscious cubby-holes will store and provide for you the positives and negatives of either choice when you drag them to the fore. But what if it’s the very first time you are required to make such a decision and you have no prior knowledge to draw on. Surely that decision will be 100% a demonstration of free will. Or will it? How can you make an informed decision when you have no data on which to make a decision? The easy option is to toss heads or tails, but there’s no free will cigar awarded for that.

Perhaps if you are right-handed you might subconsciously (there’s that word again) true right when you reached Oak Street.

Your mind, like the rest of life, the Universe and everything, is composed of molecules, in turn composed of atoms, in turn made up of the elementary particles we all learn about in high school science classes. Now the realm of the micro-verse is governed by the probability laws of quantum physics. As such, if you really want to get down and dirty, any and all mental activities at any and all levels have to take quantum physics into account. So what’s the big deal? Well, your decision to go right or left at Oak Street might just boil down to a probabilistically quantum state of some elementary particle in your brain which could go either way in a totally random way which you have no control over.

In quantum physics, when you have an equally either/or state of affairs, well that’s known as a superposition of states. If nobody is looking, you go both left and right at Oak Street until someone peeks and it’s determined either/or. It’s another version of Schrodinger’s Cat-in-the-box thought experiment with a naturally radioactive substance that has a 50/50 chance of decaying in say one hour. If the decay happens, it triggers a device inside the box that kills the cat. If the decay fails to eventuate, the cat lives. Until someone looks after one hour, the cat is both alive and dead at the same time. After someone peeks, the cat is either dead or alive.

So, in a sort of similar way, perhaps a radioactive atom inside your brain (and you are naturally slightly radioactive) will decay or not decay during the time you are agonising over that left or right turn. The decay/not decay will decide, not if the cat lives or dies but whether you turn left or right at Oak Street. In any case, you have no control. Quantum physics controls your subconscious which controls you and your decisions in the absence of any other driving force.

FREE WILL

As noted frequently above, when it comes to the subconscious you have no control over how it operates. Therefore, with respect to the subconscious, you have no free will.

While watching a DVD of a TV show or feature film for the first time, your phone rings. You hit the “pause” button while you answer the phone. Now when you return, mentally you can envision hundreds of possible scenarios or options that could unfold in the few minutes after you resume viewing by hitting the “play” button. But you know there will be only one scenario and it is fixed – absolutely. Why? It’s been pre-programmed. There’s no free will for the characters.

Now what if we could freeze frame your mind like a DVD – hit your mind’s “pause” button split seconds before a pizza dinner in all its finality detail entered your conscious mind. We, the outsiders, could imagine hundreds of scenarios of what would happen when we un-paused your mind, but just the one scenario would eventuate.

Now the question arises – you have no control over your subconscious mind and what it comes up with, yet the subconscious seems to often rule the roost where much of your decision making is unplanned; much of your creativity is unplanned; all that much to do with your imagination is unplanned, unplanned meaning your conscious mind played no active role. You just slept on it; you had that unplanned eureka moment while your brain was idling in neutral.

The DVD analogy was pre-programming. Might your subconscious be pre-programming as well? If so, no free will, and one scenario that pre-empts your free will is your existence as virtual reality in a simulated universe!

So, if you are not in control of your subconscious then that implies a lack of free will of the mind and your mental processes. You certainly don’t have mind-over-matter free will (you can’t flap your arms and fly or run faster than the speed of sound), but you no doubt think you are in charge of your own mind. If that’s not the case, well any sign of that is suggestive that you are living in a computer software-generated simulated universe which gives you no free will at all, only an illusion of free will.

Belief in astrology is self-negating your belief in your free will since the stars and the planets rule in your roost. Perhaps one idea for such acceptance of astrology is that you don’t have free will and so astrology is your scapegoat substitute.

EMOTIONS

Emotions are strange in that you may see a picture of X and burst into tears, or laugh out loud, whereas I’m totally ho-hum, under-whelmed, boring. However, another image may cause me to rant and rave, while you just yawn-the-big-yawn. In either case, you seemingly have no control over your feelings. You don’t seem to have much free will in terms of who you like or dislike or who you fall head-over-heels in love with, so again, I’d conclude that emotions are part of your subconscious.

THE SUBCONSCIOUS IS THE CONSCIOUS?

It seems however unnecessarily messy to have both a subconscious and a conscious mind. Actually, it was Sigmund Freud who divided the mind into the conscious mind and the subconscious (unconscious) mind. The question arises, might the subconscious actually be doing ALL the number crunching and feeding the answers to your (illusionary) consciousness or conscious mind, sometimes unexpectedly – that eureka moment, but more often as not, humming a constant feed along to you in the background, a feeding which as far as you’re concerned is your (illusionary) conscious mind in action but it’s all just the subconscious. You think your conscious mind is composing that letter, but the words and sentences are being fed through to your (illusionary) consciousness via that subconscious interface without you being self-aware of that. So in fact there is no consciousness housed separate and apart as an organic structure, only the illusion of one. Your automated nervous system runs the body; what we now call the subconscious runs the mind – the entire mind.

That’s probably a vastly oversimplification, but regardless of whether or not the subconscious and the conscious are separate and apart or one and the same, the subconscious is top of the pecking order over which we have no control. Only the automated central nervous system rules above all else – if it didn’t you’d be kaput, extinct, stone dead as a doorknob.

MEMORY

I’d be of the opinion that you can’t in fact operate on the conscious level at all at anytime as hinted at above. You read the word “tree” in a book, hear the word spoken, or see a “tree” in the movies or outside your window. You must immediately reach back into that subconscious cubby-hole and draw back out what a tree is in order for the work or image to make sense. You see gibberish in a book or hear it, say someone ‘speaking in tongues’; maybe it’s real gibberish or maybe it’s an unfamiliar foreign language, but it’s gibberish nonetheless. Or say you see something you’ve never seen before (or never heard or learnt about). There’s incomprehension because there’s o subconscious cubby-hole to reach back into that contains that something that will enlighten you. And so you have gibberish or the great unknown to contend with.

One hundred percent of your perception of reality comes into your mind via your five senses and if anything perceived doesn’t match up with your subconscious cubby-hole encyclopaedia then part of your reality makes no sense.

All of these millions of daily inputs, matching with cubby-hole outputs, take place so fast, not quite at the speed of light but getting there, that you have no awareness of it happening. The lag time between reading “tree” and the “ah ha, I know that that means” is so fast it just doesn’t register. If there was a significant time differential you’d know it. Back in our Stone Age cavemen days, our ancient ancestor’s world of fight or flight, survival of the fittest, any lag time would be detrimental to your well being. I see a “sabre-tooth cat” – five second delay – subconscious cubby-hole says “sabre-tooth cat bad news, run”. By then you’re its dinner; it’s too little too late for you.

Take another common scenario. After you wake up in the morning you tend to greet those around you with a “Good morning (person’s name)”. Say it’s “Good morning, John”. Now you have to reach back into your memory to recall what the appropriate phrase is and what the persons name is. You also therefore need to remember the meaning of ‘appropriate’. It would be strange and inappropriate to say “Goodnight Josephine” instead, or “I think I’ll have pizza for dinner tonight”. But how do you reach back into your memory to draw out the correct phrase when you don’t remember what you’re looking for. If you did remember what you were looking for you wouldn’t have to look. It’s the same with any though process. You’ve got to remember what it is you need to remember in order to think the thought, or say the words, or perform the actions. It’s all very circular reasoning. You have to remember what you need to remember in order to remember!

If you remember where you put your keys you don’t need to search your memory to discover where you left your keys, but you initially still had to perform that search of your memory since you remember where you put your keys! But how did you know where to search for the answer (where did I put my keys), an answer that wasn’t an answer to an unasked question like how many keys are on the keychain or what’s the colour of the key I actually need. Your memory bank is a huge place with millions of bits and pieces of data. Only a very tiny fraction is relevant to “where did I put my keys”. It’s like trying to find one sentence in an encyclopaedia or that proverbial needle in a haystack.

Further, you had to remember that you needed to remember where you left your keys. That infinite regression of I need to remember in order to remember in order to remember is almost like that series of Russian dolls, one inside the other inside the other. Ultimately your entire mind becomes 100% clogged with the key problem and you shut down from mental overload. But you don’t, shut down that is, so there’s another solution.

If you cannot consciously recall where you left your keys, and that’s a scenario we can probably all identify with, then you rely on your subconscious. If you’re too impatient for that relax, wait and see approach, there’s always the tried and true treasure hunt approach, but that in itself also involves numerous memory exercises.

YOU’RE ON AUTOPILOT

You don’t need to remember to wake up, or to breathe, or how to take one step in front of the other to walk from A to B, or how to digest your breakfast, or if you’re sick or injured your body by itself usually manages to put things right. You don’t have to remember how to heal a cut or get over the common cold. If nearly all of your body is on autopilot, pre-programmed as it were, perhaps all of your body is pre-programmed, including the mind, regardless how many divisions it has.

OFFICE ASSISTANT

I actually have two separate and apart virtual reality critters on my PC, the standard Office Assistant (cleverly disguised as a cat) and Felix [the cat]. Now the question is, do these simulated critters in any shape, manner and form mirror the (apparently) really real human?

Firstly, I think we can all agree that these two virtual critters are just that – simulations. As such we can all agree that they are just software programmes and that they have no free will. But there are many, many parallels between their behaviour, their mental processes, and that of the (apparently) really real human being.

For starters, the Office Assistant (OA) has memory. If I perform a certain action, I get a prompt to do something in response. The Office Assistant (OA) has searched its memory for an appropriate reply to my action. It has made a decision. It also shows an emotion in trying to attract my attention since it wants further input from me. Because software can and often is upgraded, well that’s learning in another guise. Felix, on the other hand, exhibits some sensory processing by exhibiting a sense of sight, smell and touch when interacting in a creative with other objects it encounters. It exhibits a range of behaviours that you’d identify with a really real cat. About the only things they are not programmed to do is go to the litter box or have sex or vomit, for fairly obvious reasons, though it could be so programmed if one wanted.

They both feed, albeit off of electrical energy. They wake up when I turn on the PC and go to ‘sleep’ when I turn off the PC. The OA actually takes catnaps during long intervals of inactivity where its helpful hints aren’t necessary. There’s also no way of telling if they are programmed to enter a dream state like real cats do. I suspect probably not as it would be unnecessary and a waste of programming.

Of course it’s all just sophisticated programming. I’m not sure exactly how that works, but I’m sure any computer software programmer worthy of the title could spell it out in incredible technical detail.

The upshot is, these clearly simulated cats do indeed mirror many of what we’d identify as real biologically human traits. Of course given the relative sophistications, it’s like comparing the value of a five cent piece against a five dollar bill, but the commonality is that both the five cent piece and the five dollar bill are money. The difference between Office Assistant/Felix and me is just a matter of degree.

MIND OVER MATTER: THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING?

Try as you will, your mind cannot influence the behaviour of non-living material, otherwise you’d always win playing the slot or poker machines and 18 holes-in-one at the golf course would be, well, par for the course.

I say non-living because your mind can influence other living minds, though I don’t mean via telepathy or some such or various other technological devices allegedly used for mind-control purposes. The quite ordinary hard stare or the ‘evil eye’ or the barking voice is all that’s required as any raw recruit at the receiving end of the Drill Sergeant’s wrath can attest to. Some minds are putty in the ‘hands’ of other minds. On a gentler note, your thoughts, ideas, words spoken or written can shape the worldviews of other minds.

Two lovers gaze into each others eyes – mental communication of a sort transpires each affecting the physiological state of the other.

Influencing other odd bods and sods apart, your mind can have some minor influence over your own body. Some people have some control over their heart rate to some extent, and the placebo effect, both positive and negative has been proven beyond all doubt in terms of alleviating minor medical ailments by accenting the positive or aggravating the negative. With respect to the later, if you really think someone’s put the whammy on you, and you believe in the power of the whammy, then you can just waste away and curl up and snuff it. It’s not surprising that such things are possible since your mind is really matter (biochemistry) and your body is really matter (biochemistry) and biochemistry can flow from one to the other. Now that only works on a relatively minor scale. You might defy the Earth’s gravity and arm toss a ball up into the air, but you can’t defy it to the extent where you can arm toss the ball all the way to Mars. Likewise, your mind might be able to shorten the duration and severity of a common cold, but it’s probably beyond realism to expect it to overcome a case of pneumonia.
